It’s Bee Season!
If you’re one of our many beekeepers, you’ve been waiting patiently for a very important phone call from us to inform you….
your bees are here!!
Every year, about this time in April, we receive hundreds of nucleus colonies (known as “nucs”) to distribute to new and existing beekeepers in our area. A nucleus colony is essentially a beehive starter-kit; it contains all the essential building blocks of a working colony, as well as the necessary bees to do the work. Our nucleus colonies each contain a frame of brood, a frame of pollen, and a frame of honey, as well as the workers, drones, and queen to kickstart production! Our beekeepers will take these frames of bees and transfer them to a fresh Langstroth hive, where the bees quickly get to work decorating their new home.
It’s a thrilling time for us all in the beekeeping community, and for many, it’s the first time this season they’ll get to experience handling their very own honeybees!
This year we handed out over 200 nucs to our beekeepers, which is among the busiest bee handouts we’ve ever had! We saw a lot of folks from our Beekeeping 101 and 201 courses, which is always inspiring to see because of the non-nonsense nature of the courses. We tend to feel a certain confidence in those we know have taken the time to really consider all the pros and cons of beekeeping, and we’re very excited to have so many new additions to the beekeeping community.
While this undoubtedly marks our biggest beekeeping event of the year, it is only the start of the season and there’s a long summer ahead for all of our beekeepers. Our commitment is to be a support system for the community; to happily provide advice, feedback, supplies, and services to them if/when the need arises over the course of their beekeeping. We’ll be here for them, every day from 9-5.
Happy Beekeeping!
